Our standard is 6 to 12 inches below grade, which handles grass, sod, and most landscaping. If you are planting a new tree in the same spot, tell us and we will grind deeper and chase the larger roots so the new root ball has clean soil to grow into.
Will the stump grow back after grinding?
No. Grinding removes the stump and root flare where new sprouts originate, which is what finally stops species like Bradford pear and silver maple from suckering. The leftover roots in the soil cannot generate a new tree and simply decompose over time.
Can I plant grass or a new tree where the stump was?
Yes. For grass, let the backfilled chips settle or swap them for topsoil, then seed or sod as normal. For a new tree, we recommend offsetting a few feet from the old spot or having us grind extra deep, since soil full of old roots and chips is temporarily nitrogen-poor while it breaks down.
Do you need to remove my fence to get the grinder in?
Almost never. The grinder fits through a standard gate, and we walk the access route with you before we start so sprinkler heads, downspouts, and landscaping are accounted for. For the rare stump with no gate access, we will tell you the options up front instead of surprising you.
